How Pros Organize a Warehouse for Greater Efficiency and Faster Shipping Times

nancyrubinMay 8, 2020May 8, 2020

Every part of a business matters. If one part fails, it can lead to the failure of the entire company. This is nowhere more true than it is for a business’s warehouse. A poorly run warehouse can quickly lead to your company going into the red and then out of business entirely. With that in mind, it’s important to know how to organize a warehouse so it runs efficiently and so your products are shipped out in a timely fashion.

Make Safety Your Top Priority

The most important principal to adhere to when designing your warehouse is to maximize safety for your employees. Warehouse injuries are common, and they can result in disability, death, and lawsuits. Ensure that accidents like products falling onto warehouse employees are impossible, and conform to all relevant OSHA safety standards.

Implement Commercial Warehouse Striping

Something you’ll want to invest in for your warehouse is commercial warehouse striping services. Warehouse striping installed on warehouse flooring helps to increase efficiency by clearly designating specific areas for specific purposes. It helps keep traffic areas clear of obstructions while also helping you organize. However, installing your own striping may create problems when it is easily damaged or impossible to remove. Using a commercial service can help you avoid these problems.

Invest in the Right Software

Something else that is essential to maintaining an efficient warehouse is investing in the right software. Not using inventory control software can be extremely cumbersome and result in huge mistakes that could cost you thousands of dollars. Instead, choose a software package suited to your needs. There are plenty of highly advanced features you can take advantage of. For example, the software can be programmed to automatically reorder stock when it’s running low so you don’t experience a shortage.

Track Errors

You can’t increase efficiency if you aren’t able to avoid errors. If you want a smoother running warehouse, make it a policy to track every error that occurs. Store that data in your network so you can go back and examine it to find out where the source of the problem is. You might, for example, need to adjust how your picking system works or have to re-train certain employees.

Running a warehouse takes a lot of effort, planning, and knowledge. It also requires having the right tools, technology and materials. Don’t skimp when it comes to running your warehouse well. The investment is sure to more than pay for itself over time. On the other hand, a poorly run warehouse can capsize your business entirely.
