Nowadays, women are seen more often in such positions as HR directors or in charge of administration and, if you look at the statistics, you’ll see that women make for about a half of labor force. They will often get to be support for various managers, heads of boards or CEOs, but still, they take up less than a third of senior management positions on a global level. So, what is it that a woman can do to thrive professionally? How do you, as a woman, compete with men in any business? How do you gain enough respect and show that you’re to be taken seriously in a world that seems to value men more simply due to their gender? Here’s how you can be a part of the change for the better.
The Importance of Education
In order to become expert in any field, you need to receive the right amount of education. This doesn’t necessarily mean getting a formal degree, although that would be preferable, but also that you never stop learning new things and expand your knowledge in an effort to do your job better. Not only can higher education boost your self-confidence, widen your horizons and encourage self-growth, but it can also improve your overall learning skills. This can make you capable of converting the things you’re taught into functional abilities, so that you can excel in what you do over and over again. However, you shouldn’t allow your education to be over the moment you get your degree. Visiting various lectures and seminars or learning things like foreign languages can also help you bring some innovation into your business and advance in it.
Look the Part
One thing you should fight for is equality in all spheres, which is why you should never allow others to objectify you or judge you for your looks. And while, in a perfect world, nobody would even care about your appearance and everybody would only observe you through your business successes, in reality, how you look makes a difference. Therefore, make sure that your clothes are appropriate for where you work. Yes, you might look amazing in a short skirt and a tight shirt, but your office clothes should perhaps be more modest and respectful. It would probably be better to keep your dresses and skirts at knee-length or longer, and that your shirts aren’t see-through or too open. Combine that with a proper pair of boots or find some elegant women’s shoes online and make sure that, when people look at you, they see the businesswoman that you are.
Work on Your Self-Esteem
Once you fill that position you’ve been aiming for and you’ve been working hard to get, you should take some time and wrap your mind around it. The key is to fully grasp the fact that you deserve to be there, which should be a huge reinforcement of your confidence. Knowing your worth can be a powerful tool or a weapon on your road to success, as it can give you the courage to speak up and share your ideas with others, knowing that they’re just as good or even better than any of your colleagues’ ones. Nevertheless, don’t forget that there’s a fine line between high self-esteem and arrogance. While you should embrace the former as a positive quality and one you’ve probably worked hard to build up, you should certainly avoid being condescending and rude to your coworkers and always treat people with the same respect you expect from them.
Don’t Hide Your Mistakes
No matter how accomplished or brilliant you are, mistakes still happen from time to time. Some may be small and even funny, but others may be more significant. No matter what kind of a mistake you make, you need to look for ways to fix it and then learn from that. This is especially important if you’re a leader in a company, as you’ll show your coworkers that everybody should be held accountable for their own actions, but also that they shouldn’t hide their mistakes from you when they make one. Feel free to ask your colleagues for their opinion and even help, which can set a good example for any future situations, when they find themselves facing an issue which they don’t think they can resolve on their own. Under no circumstances should you blame anybody else for your mistakes. Not only would that make you look insecure and dishonest, but it could lead to you losing the trust and the respect of those you work with, who rely on you and who you should be able to rely on as well.
The choices you make every morning can make a huge impact on how others perceive you and how successful you become. So, do your best to make every work day and every decision you make be worthy of the position you hold or hope to hold one day. Do whatever is in your power to earn the respect of your colleagues and then make sure you don’t lose it on your way to prosperity.
