4 Steps to Analyze a Steel Vendor for Quality Products

nancyrubinJuly 9, 2021July 9, 2021

As a business owner or manager, one of your biggest responsibilities is to properly vet potential vendors. Having the right people to provide you with your materials is critical to your bottom line and overall reputation. Failing to properly analyze a vendor can no doubt cause issues in the future, some of which may not have an easy fix to them. Those in the construction business face a higher level of responsibility as people’s safety is on the line. The following includes four steps you may take in order to properly analyze a steel vendor for quality products.

Define Your Standards

Before you even contact a steel vendor, it is imperative that you take the time to work with your team and clearly define your standards when it comes to steel products. For example, is communication your most important requirement in a vendor, or is it personal relationships with the owners of that business? If you take nothing else from this article, this one step can help greatly to navigate your way through the process of choosing the right steel vendor for your business.

Production Capacity

No matter how great a steel vendor’s communication is or how nice the people are, there are certain things that are simply no negotiating around. One of those includes their production capacity. That is how much and how quickly they can produce steel materials for you. If they cannot meet your quota, it is important to begin looking elsewhere as this can cause problems in the future.

Observation of Their Material Production Line

Anyone can claim that they use high-quality products, but not everyone can claim that they produce them in a high-quality matter. Therefore, it is highly recommended to ask for a tour of their factory. By doing so, you can begin to look over their production line and see just exactly how your products are going to be made. Note that you must request this tour on a random day to avoid the vendor simply putting on a show for you.

Risks & Guarantees

Let’s face it; every business is going to have some delays at some point. This is simply the reality of the situation, and that should not disqualify any potential vendors on your list. What you do want to pay attention to is their level of risk and the guarantees they offer. For example, what is their procedure when delays occur? Do they have a backup plan, or is there a reimbursement plan in place so you can quickly hire someone else to produce your materials?

By utilizing the information listed above, your business can begin having some peace of mind that it has chosen the right steel vendor to count on for its steel production needs.
