5 Things Every Programmer Should Do To Stay Sharp

nancyrubinAugust 18, 2021September 13, 2021

It’s not uncommon for programmers to feel like they are starting to lose their sharpness. It can be hard to keep up with the latest trends in technology, and it’s easy for old skills to fade away. But, every programmer should do a few things if they want to stay on top of their game. These are five habits that any programmer should have to keep themselves sharp and refreshed.

Play Some Coding Games

In recent years, several websites and games have been created to help programmers improve their skills. And these are not just any old coding game. They typically offer unique challenges, complete with puzzles, quests, and complex problem-solving tasks. They also usually come with a leader board. You can compete against others in your field by seeing who has the best time or score on each level. Code wars are one such website that allows users to play online. It has multiplayer battles where programmers practice programming concepts at the same time. You’ll need an account before you start playing, but this site provides plenty of exciting features for developers looking to take their coding skills up a notch.

Take An Online Coding Course

Just like how technology is changing, so does the language of coding. If you’re looking to stay on top of things, it’s a good idea to invest in an online course that will allow you to study the latest updates and developments in programming with ease. Online courses are easy enough for beginners because they often offer different levels of difficulty. You can work at your own pace without being overwhelmed by more advanced concepts from the start. Various platforms provide these courses, and it’s a good idea to do your research before choosing one. Find one that doesn’t interfere with your schedule.

Make Time For Learning Outside Of Work

Often we hear that software developers are some of the most intelligent people globally. Still, they are the most overworked because most seem to work all day long without ever taking time out for their personal development outside of work. It couldn’t be more accurate. To stay sharp as a developer, you need to make sure you’re investing regular time outside of work into learning new skills or reviewing old ones. This way, when you return to work, you can continue growing your skillset while working on projects instead of simply maintaining them. Spend time with family, enjoy a hobby or take a vacation. All this will ensure you are sharp and not bored from doing the same thing every day all year long.

Online Forums Or Discussion Boards

You can broaden your skills by participating in online forums or discussion boards. It can be a great way to get help and find out about new trends in the industry for free. You will also better understand how to use online ide tools when working on projects that require you to write code from scratch. The online tool can provide an environment where you can access your coding work and resources and not forget anything important. Taking frequent breaks is a good idea because it helps with staying rested and refreshed, so the mind doesn’t become bogged down by too much programming work at once

Create A Personal Project Every Once In A While

It is the same idea as creating something “new” but on your own, not for work or anything else related to someone else’s project. It could be an app that you’ve wanted to make for yourself. It could be working on one of those DIY projects where you can find all sorts of things, from light fixtures to fun animal prints curtains. It doesn’t matter what it is because this will keep you motivated with curiosity and excitement about doing new projects when there may not be any coming up at work.

In conclusion, a programmer’s job can be mentally exhausting, but there are ways to build up energy again. If you’re a programmer, make sure to do these five things every once in a while to keep yourself sharp. Work on side projects or other types of work unrelated to programming. It will challenge the mind and get creative juices flowing again. Every once in a while, take a break and do something you love.
