Some people love the winter weather, while some prefer hibernating until spring. However, the cold weather can make the work environment uncomfortable. When the inside is the same temperature as the outside, everyone seems cranky, and the commute is miserable. Here are some tips for keeping your employees comfortable during the winter.
Winter Weather Policies
Put your employees’ minds at ease and make the winter weather policies before the first snowstorm hits. Employees will want to know if working from home is possible during inclement weather if they can not make it to the office. Also, make it clear whether they will get paid when they cannot make it to the office due to weather or if they can use vacation time.
Clear The Walks
Make sure it is safe for your employees to get to the office. Consider hiring someone to plow the parking lot and clear the sidewalks. You do not want anyone falling and slipping on ice, and no one wants to walk in the snow in heels or dress shoes. Have plenty of ice-melting material to keep the walks clear.
Keep The Office Temperature Comfortable
It may be hard for everyone to agree on a comfortable temperature, but freezing is not an option. If you can not keep the office warm, it may be time to consider a new HVAC installation. Investing in reliable heat is a small price to pay to keep everyone in the office productive and happy.
Food And Drinks
When the weather is frightful, show your appreciation by providing comfort food. Consider treating your employees to a soup and sandwich lunch. Chicken soup or tomato basil with grilled cheese will go along to show you care. Instead of just offering tea and coffee during the winter months, consider providing a hot chocolate bar. Marshmallows, little cookies, and peppermint sticks can go a long way to lifting morale on a wintry day.
Talk About Germs
Remind employees of the ways to keep germs from spreading throughout the office. Hang signs in the restrooms reminding people to wash their hands often. Place hand sanitizer at everyone’s desk and in the coffee area. Remind your employees if they are sick, they need to stay home.
You can not run your business without your employees. Taking steps to keep them warm and comfy through the winter months is a win for everyone. The employees will feel valued and, in return, will be more productive.
