Repair Parts You Should Have on Hand for Your Shipping Fleet

nancyrubinSeptember 29, 2020September 29, 2020

Even though semi trucks may seem indestructible, they may fail while on the road and need repairs. Taking care of your shipping fleet frequently does not guarantee that some parts will not break down and need replacing every now and again. This means you should ensure that you keep essential parts on hand so that you can get the truck back on the road as quickly as possible.

It is prudent to understand the parts that require frequent replacement or servicing. However, you can reduce the amount of replacements you need to do by observing a regular maintenance schedule and appropriate driving conduct. Keeping a consistent examination cycle can go a long way to prevent problems. The following are parts you should have as the fleet supervisor for when replacements are needed.

Clutch

The clutch is an essential part of your truck’s transmission system. It is also more likely to wear down sooner in large trucks than it would in smaller cars. Therefore, it is advisable to keep the replaceable unit on hand, just in case one of your trucks is having issues with the clutch.

Spare Tires

While truck tires may last longer than standard ones, carrying an extra tire, or several, is a wise decision. They may not indicate any sign of blowing out soon, so you need to stay alert in case of an emergency. You do not want your shipment to be delayed on the road simply because you didn’t have a spare tire.

Headlamps

Your fleet is likely to operate day and night, which requires the headlights to be working properly. A flickering, dimming, or completely broken headlight could cause significant issues for drivers who are working through the night. It’s also very dangerous for other drivers on the road who might have trouble seeing the truck on the road until it’s too late. Make sure to keep Scania left hand headlamps and right hand headlamps on hand in case of failing headlights.

You should also keep the headlamps as clean as possible. If not cleaned properly, the lights may not be as reliable as they should. Cleaning agents help in eliminating any dirt and vapor that may build up at the headlamps.

Brake Pads

Descending a hilly road with faulty brakes is dangerous for your driver and anyone else who happens to be on the road. One of the parts you need to check regularly to keep your breaks in good shape is the brake pad. Brake pads wear out, and that will diminish the integrity of your breaks. Because of that, your truck requires regular brake pads replacement as a safety precaution. Having them stocked and on hand is a good idea to keep your fleet in motion.

The duration that brake pads may last depends on numerous factors. They include driving habits and the condition of the roads. To extend your brake pad’s lifespan, you should avoid making fast stops and significant inclines.

Your trucks can serve you with minimal issues if you observe proper maintenance cycles. Keeping all the spares that you might need for regular repair practices prevents time wastage along the route and plays a significant role in minimizing maintenance costs.
