First Aid
There are lots of rules and regulations relating to health & safety at work. However, one rule that most businesses live by is that you have at least one individual on-site who has been on a basic first aid course. In turn, they are capable of providing immediate medical treatment for anyone that gets injured on your premises. All businesses need a registered first aider unless you work in close proximity to somewhere that provides emergency services. Depending on how many employees you have, you might need multiple people with first aid qualifications. Generally, it’s a good idea to just make first aid training mandatory, so everyone is qualified to do it. This means that there will always be someone available to provide immediate medical attention during any accidents.
Health & Safety
It was briefly touched upon above, and your employees do need extensive health & safety training. This exists alongside first aid training and it involves teaching your employees the basics of a safe workplace. For example, manual handling comes under this category of training – as will training your workers to correctly handle certain materials or dispose of certain types of waste. In essence, you are training them to be safe at work, reducing the chances of accidents happening in the workplace.
When it comes to training your employees in all of these areas, there’s one other rule you should follow: set aside training days, don’t train them while they work. You might think this is counterproductive as setting days aside to train people means your business stops being productive. However, it’s much better to train thoroughly and ensure everyone gets proper training than to give little bits of information on the go. Yes, you sacrifice some days throughout the year, but it should mean you have more days where you’re consistently working hard and staying productive.
