I have a pretty public social presence. I participate in a lot of social activities and have memberships in many social sites. I try to be aware of what content I am making public and I pay attention to the agreements I accept when I install certain applications. The one network I am fairly private on is Facebook (weird, huh?) I have always used Facebook strictly for personal relationships. I am not friends with co-workers, clients, or many people that I have met recently (not sure what that says about how much time I spend online…) I don’t post as frequently to Facebook as I do to other social networks. I do post most of my pictures to Facebook.
I am friends with both of my kids on Facebook. They are both in college and have heard my lectures for years about posting inappropriate stuff on the Internet. I am particularly annoying this year since they are both finishing their degrees and will be looking for jobs or trying to get into graduate school.
I was spending some time with my daughter last week and we happened to be discussing posting content on Facebook. When I mentioned something about not seeing her post that often, she laughed and told me that she hides content from me (can you imagine that.)
I hadn’t really used this before, but, it does seem about pretty useful. When you post something to Facebook, you can decide who sees it and who doesn’t:
Before you submit a post to Facebook, choose who can see it!
Select Custom from the choices and you can make content visible to, or hide it from, people, lists or everyone!
