3 Tips for Running a Business with a Chronic Condition

nancyrubinOctober 5, 2022October 5, 2022

A lot of people are afraid to start a business when they have a chronic condition because they believe that it’s going to limit them. While it is true that chronic conditions can affect your everyday operations, there are usually ways that you can work around them unless you have a severe disability. You might have to take a little less workload or hire people to help you, but you shouldn’t let a chronic illness stop you from pursuing your dreams. Here are some tips for people who want to start and run a successful business with a chronic condition.

Outsource and Automate as Much as You Can

One of the most important things that you’ll need to understand when running a business as someone with a disability or a chronic condition is that you can’t do everything on your own. You need to take advantage of all the outsourcing opportunities that you can find to alleviate the pressure on your shoulders. You can outsource everything from human resources, to payroll, to marketing, so look at what you could delegate before you even start.

Automating processes could also take some stress out of managing your business and save you from performing menial and mentally exhausting tasks. Things like sending invoices, confirmation emails, and tax reporting can all be automated with the right solutions. So, look at your options there as well and learn how to automate crucial but repetitive tasks.

Plan Your Travels Carefully

If your line of business requires you to travel a lot, know that it’s possible with a chronic condition, but you’ll have to prepare well in advance. One of the things you should do is start looking for NEMT long distance solutions as soon as possible. Non-emergency medical travel solutions can facilitate logistics for you, and they could come in handy if you have lots of medication to take. They can also do things like check your blood pressure or blood sugar during the flight and administer any special treatment that you may need.

In addition to that, you will need to make sure that you get the proper insurance coverage and that you check the state of the healthcare system wherever you’ll be going. You can’t put money before your health, and if you get a contract somewhere that is not safe, you’ll either have to turn down the client or consider high-end private healthcare solutions.

Listen to Your Body

Running a business can be a lot of fun, but it can be exhausting and stressful as well. Stress in particular can exacerbate the symptoms of chronic illnesses, so if you notice that your condition is getting worse because of a particular contract or because you have too much work, you have to learn how to lift your foot off the gas pedal and say no from time to time.

Running a business when you have a chronic condition is possible if you take the proper precautions and know your limits. Make sure that you know what you’re getting into first and foremost, and only take on what you can handle.
