Breaking Ground on a Construction Project? Do These 4 Things Before You Start Building

nancyrubinOctober 10, 2022September 17, 2024

There are plenty of ways to start a project, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few solid guidelines to stick to as your work is being set up. No matter what you’re building, there will be a few plans to execute before getting the project off the ground that will help increase the odds that everything turns out well. Here are 4 things to think of before you start building.

Make a Reasonable Budget

Try to resist the urge to start blowing money left and right on items and services you think you’ll need once your project is up and running. Crafting a sensible budget helps ensure that your construction plans won’t go belly up before they’re brought to life. To put the reality of this concern in perspective, a large majority of construction projects throughout the world run well over cost. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you by making sure that funding some aspects of the project, including contracting, manufacturing, brokerage, and insurance, is a priority.

Select a Location

While this one may come off as a no-brainer, the importance of location cannot be understated. Chances are, you’ve already picked out a location by the time you’re reading this. You’ll also need to obtain permission from whatever zoning commissions and authorities hold jurisdiction in the location. If there are any commercial properties involved, a property agent should be there to help deal with the acquisition. You’ll want to find out exactly what permission you will need to create your ideal structure within the confines of the law.

Once you have a location in mind, having the lot checked by professionals is extremely important. Hiring a geotechnical engineer can save you a lot of trouble, as their expertise lies in such ventures as land surveying. They examine aspects of the terrain such as the salt and mineral content in the soil your building will be on top of, as well as the likelihood of landslides and other serious geological concerns.

Acquire Zoning Permits

You’ll still need to obtain all the right permits for zoning. Local ordinances describe the kinds of structures allowed to be built on the land you’re working with. Make sure to adhere to all relevant zoning codes and regulations. Consulting a Minneapolis construction law attorney or an attorney near you wouldn’t hurt at this stage, as zoning permits and their proper legal acquisition are paramount to the success of your project.

Request 3D Renderings of the Finished Build

Thanks to advances in technology, architects, engineers, and businesses can put together 3D composite images of what your construction project will be expected to look like before you even break ground. These futuristic blueprints can be used to highlight obvious problems with your project before you begin. Even if nothing that needs to be changed pops up, seeing an accurate depiction of your completed project might help you realize you need to take part or all of it in a different direction.

You can be more confident of achieving success in the future once you incorporate these four steps. Perform plenty of research and examine every part of your project plan thoroughly, and you should be able to maximize your chances of realizing your construction dream.
