It’s a huge industry, with plenty of competition and of course that is part of the fun, as with any startup business but it’s a huge market because so many products are made within a warehouse structure. You must certainly have a plan to stick to and when opening a huge operation such as a warehouse business, you need to look into all the logistics behind the company which also includes looking after your workers. Dangers within warehouse industry is huge, and you will need to ensure you have the right insurance for your workers and pass health and safety codes so that your workers are not in danger and are happy to work for you. Look at a plan of what you’re going to make, who you’re working with, where your products may be distributed and of course your finances. How much money will be put into each category and of course make sure you have a marketing plan in place because the chance is you will be outnumbered with other similar businesses. If you have your mission and a well structured plan, you are well on the way to success.
Look at finances – what is there to buy!
You will be buying not just the warehouse and the produce needed but machinery and this may include things such as: fork lift trucks, racks, stackers, pallet trucks and pallet stackers; it may be beneficial to get into contact with pallet chain conveyors. You’ll need further equipment for the offices attached, shelving, computers, possibly trucks or vans for distribution if you are smaller and local. Of course under the umbrella of finance, comes the very real estimation of worker’s wages. How much will you be paying them and how many do you hope to employ. It will not be a small workforce, you’ll likely be employing multiple staff members to undertake all different types of work within the warehouse.
Your employees will want to be well paid!
It is quite a dangerous work environment which can come with a lot of physical work, long hours and issues with any machinery and products. It’s vital that you hire experienced and reliable workers who are willing to work hard for you but this will come at a cost. You will need to offer competitive pay for good workers, after all these workers will be the bread and butter of your business, without them you will not have a workable business and it will not succeed. In the long run, however, your investments into staff will pay off and you will see a good return if you are running your business well and efficiently.
Am I selling things to the right industries?
You may have an idea of what you want to sell but this may not be profitable. Look at the industries that are thriving, do your market research and look at what is working well right now. Things may change, but there is an opportunity within every industry but you must ultimately pin down the right niche for you. What retailers may need your assistance? Look at your competitors in the local areas, and try to adjust your business and learn from them. Offer something new and exciting.
