Do you want to design your own product? Maybe you have a fantastic idea, and you want to see if it is possible for you to bring it to life. Either way, if you need some help with the design process then this is the guide for you.
Product Design Idea – Make your Notes on Paper
Your product comes when you have identified a problem and a solution. You may have some notion of how it looks, but you won’t be able to show anyone if it is not on paper. Write down a few notes so you can communicate your idea in writing. While compiling these notes, you also need to take the time to make sure that any products that you are thinking about producing meet certain requirements, and they must reach a certain level of design, manufacturing and inspection too. Furthermore, by taking part in gd&t training, you can ensure that all of these processes are done to the highest quality. Everyone wants their product to be the best it can be, and it all starts from the moment you put pen to paper.
Product Design Research- Ensuring Nobody Else has the Same Idea
After you have written down all of your notes, you then need to make sure that nobody else has the same product as you. Start out with a simple Google search and go on images too, so you can see if anyone else has the same ideas.
Product Design Sketches- Get Comfortable Drawing
If you feel very comfortable drawing, then you need to try and draw your idea on paper. Doodle it and make sure that you can come up with a workable concept. Your drawings can easily help a design firm to come up with a new idea. At this point you need to try and add notes or even arrows so you can highlight any important features. Some industrial design firms may have some initial CAD drawings at this point. Here you would define the overall form, the feel and the colour. If you feel as though you have all of this, then now would be the time for you to go looking into the 3D software stage.
Mechanical Drawings- Use CAD
Depending on how complex your idea is, industrial designers will input your idea into 3D software. Your exact measurements will be defined at this stage and you will also have the manufacturing process worked out. Mechanical engineers need to be able to create a mould from what you have created, so you have to make sure that every little bit of your idea is planned out as much as possible. Now would also be the time for you to explore the idea of PCB assembly and soldering.
Patenting your Product- Focus on your Core Ideas
Some inventions come with a core idea or even some necessary features. If you want to make the most out of your design, then you need to make sure that you protect it as much as possible. This will help you to license your product if you need to, and it will give you the foundation you need to create a business from it. If you do not patent your product when you need to, then you may find that you end up running into issues at a later date, such as not being able to launch it or competitors stealing your ideas.
If you want some help with your product launch then there are companies out there who can help you, so don’t be afraid to look into them if possible so you can maximise your potential.
